Antique C.1900, a French trompe-l'œil porcelain terrine, likely manufactured by Pillivuyt Mehun - indicated by the number 4 to base. It is designed to resemble a decorated game pie or pâté en croûte. The lid is intricately molded and painted to create the illusion of a pastry crust. These terrines were originally created for serving game pies to nobility and royalty, particularly during flour shortages in 18th-century France. Pillivuyt is a renowned French porcelain brand, known for its high-quality craftsmanship and traditional designs. This example is in fabulous original vintage condition on the outside - just a few scuffs, nicks to the finish - however there is a crack running left to right inside - please look closely at the photos . The terrine is structurally solid and there there is no sign that the item will break if used as a beautiful decorative item - but I would not recommend using it in an oven.
